Keys Locked in Your Car, First Steps and Why It Happens

Check that nobody and nothing is shut inside the car before anything else, then try every door and the boot, because one is often still open. Locked Out Auto Locksmith opens a locked car without damage from £80, with no VAT added.

This guide covers what to do in the first few minutes, when to call 999 instead of a locksmith, and the real reasons a car locks itself with the keys still inside, so the same thing does not keep happening.

What to Do First

  • Check for anyone or anything shut inside, including a child or a pet, before doing anything else.
  • Try every door and the boot, since a central locking fault sometimes leaves one of them open.
  • Ask whether anyone with you has a spare key, a partner, a parent or whoever else carries one.
  • Stay near the car rather than walking away, particularly if the keys are visible on a seat.
  • Call a locksmith and give a clear location, a street name, a postcode or a nearby shop.

When to Call 999 Instead of a Locksmith

A child or a pet shut inside a car is an emergency, because the inside of a car heats up far faster than the air outside it, even on a mild day. Call 999 first in that situation and let the police decide how the person or animal is reached, then call a locksmith afterward for the car itself.

Outside of that situation, a locked car with nobody inside is not an emergency, and a locksmith reaches most of the North West within the same visit window as any other call out.

Why You Should Not Force the Door Open

A coat hanger, a wedge or a flat bar usually scratches the paint, tears the door seal, or damages the lock mechanism, and a damaged lock can leave the car unable to lock properly afterward. A broken window adds a repair bill and leaves glass inside the car on top of the original problem.

A locksmith is trained in non destructive methods built to open the door without any of that damage, which is the real saving over a DIY attempt, not just the time.

Why Does a Car Lock Itself With the Keys Still Inside

A lockout with the keys inside is rarely bad luck. It usually traces back to one of five causes.

  • An auto lock or self locking feature, fitted to many cars built in the last decade, which relocks the doors if none of them is opened again after unlocking, or locks all doors once the car starts moving.
  • A keyless entry system that cannot sense the key, because the fob is buried in a bag, left in the boot, or too far from the door for the car to pick up its signal.
  • A weak or faulty fob battery, which can stop a keyless system detecting the fob even when it is close by, and wears out faster on vehicles used for work.
  • A worn or faulty door lock, which can stick, fail to respond to the fob, or lock on its own even when nothing has been pressed.
  • Simple human error, an accidental button press or a child playing with a door switch, with no fault in the car at all.

What If the Engine Is Still Running

Stepping out to scrape frost or warm the car up and finding the doors have locked with the engine still running is its own version of the same problem. The car left unattended like this wastes fuel and is a theft risk, so the safest step is to stay with the car and call a locksmith straight away rather than leave it running and walk off.

Keeping a spare key in a pocket during winter warm ups avoids the problem happening at all.

This is a different situation from a general locked out of car call out, where the keys might be lost or simply not working rather than visible inside the vehicle, though the price and the response are the same either way.

Other Lockout Questions

How Do I Avoid Getting Locked Out Again

Keeping a spare key somewhere other than the car, checking the key is in hand before closing the door, and replacing a fob battery as soon as it starts acting up all cut the chances of the same lockout happening twice.

What If the Keys Are Lost Rather Than Locked Inside

A lost key is a different job from a lockout. Car key replacement covers cutting and programming a new key when no working key is left at all.

Lockout FAQs

Can a Locksmith Open My Car Without Damaging It

Yes, a locksmith opens a locked car using non destructive methods in almost every case, without forcing the door or breaking a window.

What Does It Cost to Open a Locked Car

Opening a locked car starts from £80, with no VAT added, confirmed on the phone before anyone drives out.

What If My Key Fob Battery Is Dead

A dead fob battery can stop a keyless car sensing the key even when it is close by, which looks like a lockout but is really a battery problem. A locksmith can open the car and check the fob while there.

Is a Car Lockout Covered by Breakdown Cover

Some breakdown policies cover a lockout the same as any other call out, so it is worth checking the policy wording before paying a locksmith directly, in case the cost can be claimed back.

The locksmith answers

Nine times out of ten the car has not done anything strange, it has just done exactly what it was designed to do, lock itself for security the moment nobody opens a door.

Do not fight the car. Stay with it, keep the keys in sight if you can see them, and call me. It is always quicker and cheaper than a DIY attempt that goes wrong.
