Locked Out Auto Locksmith Northwest Ltd is a one man mobile auto locksmith business run by Paul Wright from 21 Charlotte Dr in Wigan, trading since 2019 and covering the towns within 25 miles of Wigan.
Every job is done by Paul at the vehicle, which means the person who answers the phone is the person who cuts and programmes the key.
The list below holds every fact a driver or a business usually asks for before booking an auto locksmith.
Each of these facts is repeated on the Google Business Profile, so the figures a driver sees in the map results and the figures on this website are the same.
One person, start to finish
Paul Wright started Locked Out Auto Locksmith Northwest in 2019 and has run it on his own since then. He worked as a mechanic before he became an auto locksmith, so ignition faults, wiring faults and worn locks are familiar ground rather than guesswork.
Because the business is one person, the driver who calls speaks to the locksmith who turns up. There is no call centre taking the booking, no subcontractor sent in his place and no price agreed by someone who has not seen the vehicle.
The jobs that fill the week are lost keys, spare keys, lockouts, broken key extraction, ignition barrels and key programming for cars, vans and fleets of every make. Key and fob repair is the one job Locked Out does not take on, so a faulty remote is replaced with a new key programmed to the vehicle rather than opened up and repaired.
SERMI is the European scheme that decides which independent locksmiths and garages are allowed to reach the security data that carmakers keep behind their own gateways. An approved locksmith is audited, background checked and issued with credentials that the carmaker systems recognise.
For a driver the difference shows on newer vehicles. Without that approval, a locksmith is limited to what can be done around the security system, and some makes and model years simply cannot be coded at all. With it, the key is added through the manufacturer route, the same route a franchised dealer uses, and the lost key can be removed from the vehicle memory so it no longer starts the engine.
Locked Out is SERMI approved, and the approval sits alongside a DBS check and £1 million of public liability cover. Those three together are what a main dealer, a leasing company or a fleet manager normally asks for before letting anyone near a vehicle.
A replacement key is only ever made for the person entitled to the vehicle, and the check depends on where the vehicle is parked.
When the vehicle is at the home address of the owner, the address itself is the check and no paperwork is needed. When the vehicle is anywhere else, such as a car park, a workplace or the roadside, a driving licence or the V5C logbook is checked before any key is cut or programmed.
The van is the workshop. Key blanks, a key cutting machine and the programmers that read and write vehicle immobilisers all travel to the job, which is why a key is usually finished in one visit instead of the vehicle going anywhere on a recovery truck.
For cutting and generating keys.
For key programming across most makes.
For deeper work on European vehicles.
For diagnostics and immobiliser work.
For bench work on locked modules.
Programmers for Japanese, Korean and newer models.
For reading chips directly when the vehicle demands it.
Carried in the van, so the key is finished on site.
Equipment is replaced and added to as vehicles change, because a programmer that covers a 2015 model does not always cover the same make built in 2025.
Seven jobs make up almost all of the work, and the price of each one starts from a figure that moves with the make, the model, the year and the key type.
A new key cut and programmed when no working key is left, with the lost key removed from the vehicle memory.
A second key copied from a working key, cut and programmed at the vehicle.
Entry with opening tools when the keys are locked inside, without forcing the door or the lock.
Transponder keys, remote keys and keyless smart keys paired to the vehicle.
Standard and laser cut blades cut from a key, from the key code or by decoding the door lock.
A snapped blade removed from a door lock or an ignition, with a new key cut where the old one cannot be used.
A replacement barrel fitted and coded to the existing keys when the ignition is worn or jammed.
