A car locked with keys inside is usually down to one of a few causes. It could be a self-locking feature, a keyless system that can’t sense the key, or a fob fault. Sometimes it is just a slip of the hand. The next step depends on the cause, but one rule never changes: don’t force your way in. Call a mobile auto locksmith like Locked Out Auto Locksmith Northwest, and we will get you back in without damage.

Why Has My Car Locked Itself With the Keys Still Inside?

It can be a shock when your car locks on its own. There is nearly always a clear reason. Here are the most common causes, and what you can do about each one.

Auto-Lock and Self-Locking Security Features

Some cars lock themselves as a security feature. On many models, if you press the fob but don’t open a door straight away, the car locks itself again. Other cars lock all the doors as soon as you start driving.

These features protect your car from theft, but they can catch you out. Step out to open a gate or grab something from the back, and the car may lock behind you.

Your car handbook explains how its auto-lock works. Read that section so you know what to expect, and keep your keys in your hand when you step out.

Keyless Entry That Can’t Sense the Key

Keyless cars use a signal from the fob to tell when the key is nearby. If the car can’t pick up that signal, it may not realise the key is inside.

This can happen when the key is buried deep in a bag or tucked in the boot. A weak fob battery can also make the signal harder for the car to read.

Keep your key in a pocket rather than a bag where you can. That way, it stays with you and the car can detect it more easily.

A Weak Battery or Faulty Fob

Car keys take a lot of wear and tear, especially for taxi and van drivers. Over time, a fob can start acting up, and the locking may become unpredictable.

If your fob stops working properly, check the battery first. If that doesn’t solve it, we can inspect the fob and replace it if we find a fault. Locked Out Auto Locksmith Northwest also replaces faulty central locking remote fobs.

Worn or Faulty Door Locks

A worn door lock can also cause trouble. It might stick, fail to open or behave oddly with your fob. If a lock is faulty, we can replace your vehicle’s door locks and ignition.

Simple Human Error

Sometimes there is no fault at all. You might press the lock button by accident, or a child might play with the door switch. These moments happen to everyone.

Can a Car Lock Itself With the Engine Running, and What Should I Do?

Yes, it can. A common example is a frosty morning. You start the engine to clear the windscreen, step out to scrape the ice, and the door locks behind you.

A car locked with keys in ignition and the engine running needs fast action. The car keeps burning fuel, and a running car is an easy target for thieves. Walking away from it is also against the rules. Rule 123 of the Highway Code says you must not leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running.

If this happens to you:

To avoid it, keep a spare key on you during winter warm-ups. That way, a self-locking door won’t leave you stranded.

What Should I Do If My Car Is Locked and My Keys Are Inside?

When you’re locked out of your car, think about the cause first. It helps you pick the right next step.

If a child or pet is trapped inside and in danger, call 999 before anything else. If you suspect a fob problem, a spare key with a working battery may get you in. If your keys are sitting on the seat, call a locksmith rather than trying to force a door.

Online videos claim to show how to unlock a car with keys inside using a coat hanger or wedge. These tricks can scratch paint, tear seals and damage locks. A trained locksmith is the safer choice.
